Abstract
The experiment was conducted to select the suitable paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) varieties in soil-culture in highland Seeding and transplanting were done on March 23 and May 20 in 1999, respectively, and plants were harvested from late August to late November. Twenty paprika varieties were compared for their growth, fruit characteristics, and yield. First flowering date was ranged from June 16 to June 25, and plant height at harvesting time ranged from 118.5 to 158.9 §¯. Accumulative temperature (degree days) between pollination and fruit coloration ranged from 1,223 to 1,408¡É, being greatest in red-fruited types, less in yellow ones and orange ones. Number of fruits per plant ranged from 3.8 to 6.9, and marketable yield per variety ranged from 21,107 to 44,135 §¸¡¤§µ^(-1). Marketable yield per plant was the greatest in yellow ones, less in red ones, and the least in orange ones. Ten varieties were selected for high yield and quality of fruit: red ones were Spirit, Cartago, Cumbia, Edison, and Corsica; yellow ones were Fiesta, Romeca, and Kelvin; orange ones were Nassau and Narobi.
